I am bumping this thread because I would like a more definitive answer too. Here's what I have done and it seems to work so maybe you can glean something from it.
My application is to take a number of tracks (e.g. some bg vocals) send them out to an external unit (e.g. compressor or mic pre or equalizer) for some color/flavor.
Here is my method (btw I am using a 16.0.2 so I don't have some of the routing you do.)
In the i/o matrix I 'reserve' 2 stereo channels - one in the input side and one on the out put side. Lets say 11/12 for output which I label 'pipe Send' and 13/14 on the input side which I label 'Pipe Return'
I route all the tracks I want to have processed to a bus. Put the Pipeline Stereo plug on this bus and set its output to' Pipe Send'
In the pipeline plug set the i/o to 'Pipe Send' and Pipe Return'
Create a new Stereo track with Pipe Return as its input
In the 16.0.2 have channels 11/12 sent to Aux 1 and Aux 2
On external unit have the input connected to Aux 1 and Aux 2 and the output to 13/14
Turn on firewire for 11/12 and 13/14 and either monitor or record the track that's getting the return
I am doing this from memory since I am not at my rig but I hope it gets you closer.
